Lake Nakuru National Park Day Trip Overview
Description
Lake Nakuru National Park is a 177sqkm park located some 160km northwest of Nairobi City. The park is located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and is home to one of the several soda lakes which go by the same name. The park is fully fenced by electric wire to avoid human–wildlife and protect the endangered rhino population in the park. Lake Nakuru National Park is located only 5 minutes from the Nakuru township and it’s a popular day trip destination for residents of Nakuru and Nairobi as well.
The Nakuru National Park is home to more than 50 animal species and more than 400 species of birds. The park was started in 1966 as a sanctuary for birds and to protect the flamingos and other endemic birds. The park is a very successful sanctuary for the white and black rhinos. Its fenced-in nature makes it relatively easy to spot the rhinos adjacent to the game drive tracks. A game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park is easy because the park is relatively small and fully fenced, hence optimal game viewing.
The animals to see in a full-day Nakuru National Park game drive include rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos, gazelles, hyenas, giraffes, buffalos, zebra, cheetahs, baboons, elands, impalas, waterbucks, and many others.
